What makes Freddie Roach tick? Why hasn’t Freddie Roach married? What about children? I asked him about marriage one time. I asked him if there was any reason as to why he never got married. His reply was short and to the point, ” I can’t find a woman to take a second seat to boxing.”
Freddie Roach lives, breathes, and eats boxing. His entire life is devoted to the sport that he loves, and that’s boxing. He was a fierce fighter when he was in the ring, and now that his career as a fighter is over, he has risen to be the most famous trainer in the world.
Roach has trained the biggest names in the business. From Mike Tyson, to Oscar De La Hoya, and of course the great Manny Pacquiao. So why do all of these great fighters want Freddie Roach to train them? It’s the genius of Freddie Roach. There isn’t a trainer in the game better, nobody breaks down the game and creates a strategy better than Freddie Roach.
While covering the Gary Russell (US Olympian) fight in Tunica, Mississippi a few weeks ago, I asked some of the fans what their thoughts were on Freddie Roach. Most Mississippians respect Freddie Roach on a very high level. I spoke with boxing fan Kevin Kiley and got his thoughts on Freddie Roach. Kiley a long time boxing fan remembers when Roach was actively fighting, “I remember watching him on ESPN, the guy was tough as nails. He was too tough for his own good in fact. He took a lot of punches, and I wonder if that is what led to his Parkinson’s.”
Freddie Roach never won a world title, but don’t let that fool you. Roach was a very good fighter, very tough, and he let it all go in the ring. Roach has since gone on to become the most in demand boxing trainer in the world. Jason Daniels, a boxing fan from Tunica, MS spoke about Roach the trainer, ” Obviously he knows what he’s doing. You don’t get to a level of success like he has if you don’t know what you’re doing. Roach has a resume for the ages, and he has earned it.”
One of the things that Freddie loves to do is to study film. Roach breaks down a fighters style, he breaks down their habits, and he creates a game plan, and he has his fighter execute that game plan. Manny Pacquiao is a prime example. Roach turned a great one handed fighter into a two handed legend killer. Pacquiao learned the craft from Freddie Roach, and has perfected his game. Roach studies the opponent, creates the plan, and Pacquiao executes it…Period.
Freddie Roach will surely go down as one of the best trainers of all time. His Wild Card Gym, located in Hollywood, California has been home to some of the greatest fighters of all time. What brings all of these great fighters to Hollywood? It’s the genius of Freddie Roach.
