PALM SPRINGS, CA – Super middleweight Arthur Abraham and World Boxing Organization Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck looked in prime form about a month from their scheduled fights Friday in the first day of sparring since flying here from Germany Sunday.
Abraham, 30-0 (25 KO’s), fights southpaw Andre Dirrell, 18-1 (13 KO’s) March 6 in neighboring Rancho Mirage, CA in the second round of his participation in the Super Six World Boxing Classic at the Agua Caliente Casino and televised on Showtime.
“The sparring was very good,” said Abraham. “I’m glad we came to America early to get adjusted,” he added.
Abraham recently vacated the International Boxing Federation Middleweight Championship after 10 successful defenses to move up in weight to the 168 lbs. division.
The Berlin, Germany native sparred with grizzled – veterans Dewey Welliver of Spokane, Washington and southpaw Jermain Mackey of The Bahamas Friday, and former title challenger Kingsley Ikeke of Nigeria (and now Los Angeles) has joined the camp.
WBO Champ Huck, 27-1 (20 KO’s), sparred with heavyweight Chauncy Welliver and a young local pro.
Huck defends his title in Germany a week after Abraham against American Adam Richards.
The two Sauerland Events fighters are training at the Coachella Valley Boxing Club managed by Lee Espinoza in Coachella, CA about 20 minutes from Palm Springs.
Huck moved his training here to be with his coach Ulli Wegner who had to be here to train Abraham.
