One on One With Victor Ortiz
Let’s get right into this, February 25th Live from Club Nokia In L.A., you will lock horns with Hector Alatorre, You and Hector seem to have some history there. What can you tell us about Hector Alatorre?
VO- Well I guess we fought one another some 7 years ago or something, I have a pretty good memory but hey whatever, all I know is that he is a strong fighter and he is tough so I will be ready for whatever he has.
During the Press Conference to announce your fight against Hector, Hector went on to say that he wants the very best Victor Ortiz to show up, it was then that Rolando Arellano your manager then stepped up to the mic and said that the Gates of Hell are now open, and he will now have to dance with the devil. Are you feeling the same way? Are you looking to show up and give Alatorre a vicious beating and make him eat his words?
VO-[laughing] I thought it was a great quote given by my manager Rolando. It’s very true, he is asking for the very best Vicious Victor Ortiz and that’s exactly what he is going to get.
There are alot of fighters that will try to mentally rattle you as Alatorre tried to do with you, you seemed to enjoy the extra smack talking by him. Some fighters get so broken down mentally that they then forget to execute the game plan come fight night. How are you able to control the added extra emotions that you may be feeling as the time comes to ring that bell?
V0- I just don’t allow for it to get to me, I look at it as fuel for me. I know what I have to do come fight night so I don’t let that extra trash talk get to me. I feel that those that talk alot are insecure, that’s how I see it at least.
Obviously at 140 there are alot of big time players in the division right now, who would you say off the top of your head are the top 3 or 5 in the division right now?
VO- You are very right, 140 is loaded right now, but right now I’m only thinking about Hector Alatorre. How do you like that answer?[laughing] For real though bro, that’s all I’m thinking of these days is Alatorre.
A friend of mine asked me who I thought is the closest thing to Oscar De La Hoya as far as being the future face of the sport, my answer came down to Amir Khan, Jorge Linares, and yourself. All 3 of you have recently had your setbacks, but I feel that just as the case is with Khan, I feel that you and Linares will be back smarter and better than ever before because it’s not about you going down, it’s all about getting back up and coming back from a defeat.
VO- I agree with you 100%, it’s all about how you come back from a defeat and what lesson you learned. I appreciate the kind words from you bro.
It’s like we talked about back in September when we had lunch with David Rodela, my take on David and you was that you guys are warriors so if anyone or anything happens to derail the path for you, you guys will find a way to get back on your feet and find that path once again, have you talked to David since his recent loss to Eloy Perez? I tried calling but haven’t heard back from him yet.
VO- Yeah bro, that was a good time we had that day, I waited for your calls but I guess we kept missing one another. As you know, David is my boy, he is like my big brother. I did talk to him and he is doing good. It’s like you said, he will be back.
I see great things in your future, I see you facing Brandon Rios in a De La Hoya/Vargas type of war, I also see you facing Devon Alexander or Mickey Bey in a De La Hoya/Mayweather type of mega event down the road, if all goes well against Alatorre, who are you looking at next?
VO- Hey man, I too can also see those fights down the road. It would be great to take part in those great fights for the fans, but first up is Hector Alatorre. So Bro, do not miss my next fight.
