The eight or so million dollars that Floyd Mayweather Jr would earn to fight Shane Mosley is nothing in comparison to the 40 million dollars that he would have earned in a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Recently this writer spoke with famed fight trainer Freddie Roach and got his thoughts on the aftermath of the Pacquiao “vs” Mayweather train wreck. Roach still believes that ultimately the two fighters will see each other in the ring in the future, ” Floyd knows that he can’t earn 35 to 40 million dollars fighting anyone other than Manny Pacquiao. He chickened out this time, but he will probably come around in due time.”
In the meantime, it appears as if Mayweather is turning his back on a fight with Shane Mosley as well. If this report is true, it would certainly knock his reputation down a few more notches. Freddie made it clear that he still is not happy with Floyd Mayweather Sr either. When informed that big Floyd made steroid allegations on the 8CountNews podcast a few times he responded, ” The thing is, just because you are a convicted drug dealer doesn’t mean you know a thing about drugs.” There is obviously no love lost between both camps, so it remains to be seen on whether or not this fight will get done in the future. The amount of money involved in the fight, one would think would be enough for people to swallow their pride and put aside any differences.
Mississippians who follow the sport for the most part believe that the breakdown in negotiations were more Mayweather’s fault than anyone else’s. Several people that this writer has spoken with throughout the Jackson, MS sports bars feel as if Mayweather was looking for a way out of the fight the whole time. It’s a confusing notion to say the least. Would someone actually toss up to 40 million in the garbage because they were afraid of defeat?
Roach informed this writer that they have moved forward. He even says that the fight against Clottey will be a more exciting fight than a fight with Mayweather, ” Clottey is a big strong welterweight, with a good chin, and can bang. Unlike Mayweather, Clottey will stand and fight and not run. This is a competitive fight, and it wont be a boring one.” Said Roach.
Fans from Biloxi to Southaven MS were all extremely let down when the negotiations fell though between Pacquiao and Mayweather. Perhaps they will get their shot to see this big fight in the future, but until then it is Pacquiao “vs” Clottey.
