Top Rank leaves Golden Boy as a distant second

America’s #1 boxing promotional firm is Top Rank.

If you have any doubt in that statement, look at the biggest promotional news of the week within the boxing world:

1. Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, a fight demanded by fans fell apart. 2. Manny Pacquiao, promoted by Top Rank, quickly signed a fight with Joshua Clottey – also a Top Rank fighter. 3. Mayweather is still looking for a future opponent, guided by Golden Boy Promotions – but not officially promoted. 4. Golden Boy Promotions then turned their attention to finalizing a miserable pay per view fight between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Junior.

So in one week, Top Rank delivered a fight that will be rich and competitive in action for Manny Pacquiao against Joshua Clottey. Keeping in mind that Top Rank was able to get Manny Pacquiao to soften his stance on drug testing and agree to blood draws, but Mayweather would not soften his stance on the timing of the testing.

Top Rank did its part to make the mega fight, but Golden Boy was unable to control or corral the talent they were representing.

Then instead of offering the public an entertaining fight, they announce a fight between two fighters who have were low in entertainment at their peaks and now are snores in the ring at ages at or above 40 years of age. Did anyone in the public demand Hopkins vs. Jones?

So while Los Angeles based Golden Boy Promotions was the rising start in boxing promotions five years ago, they are no where near the best American fight promotion and hanging on in prominence due to Oscar De La Hoya’s backing and their sweet relationship with HBO. The American boxing network seems to give Golden Boy’s television dates regardless of the quality, or lack there of delivered.

Meanwhile Top Rank develops their own talent for the most part, puts on and promotes their own shows, and if need be, broadcast shows on their own pay per view network.

Golden Boy is struggling to get our under their ancient talent base headed by Hopkins and Shane Mosley, but blindly signs prospects in order to replace the faded stars with little or no success (see Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero, Juan Diaz, and Jorge Linares). To make matters worse they are now in the game of signing veterans who were never entertaining (Sergio Mora and John Ruiz).

Top Rank is tops in boxing promotions. ***
