The former world light-welterweight champion has been on a break from boxing since his second-round knockout defeat to Manny Pacquiao last May.
Hatton said on website: “I’ve decided to make a comeback and have another fight this year – probably round about the summertime.”
Although an opponent and venue are yet to be arranged, the 31-year-old has said that his opposition “will have to be a champion or a big name” in order for him to finish at the top.
Hatton suffered only one other defeat in his 47-fight career, which was against Floyd Mayweather Jr for the WBC title in December 2007.
