Jeff Mayweather Interview: “One of the Biggest fights in History that never happened”

Officialscorecard.com had the time to catch up with Jeff Mayweather the uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the other brother of Floyd Sr. and Roger. We had to get his opinion on why he thinks the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao fight fell though. He let’s us know whether or not if a fight will ever take place between the two. Also if Floyd is going to retire anytime soon or keep fighting. This legendary trainer has alot of insight into the boxing game as well and he knows the politics of boxing. Let’s get into the interview below.

OSC: What do you think happned with your nephew and pacquiao? Why give up 40 million?

Jeff Mayweather: That answer is very simple the two couldn’t agree on the terms of the testing, well sometimes you have to take a stand on something you feel strongly on and money doesn’t control your every decision. They both will still make plenty money just not as much at one time.

OSC: Do you think Pacquiao is afraid of Floyd? Hiding something? Or both?

JM: I certainly don’t think he is scared of Floyd or any fighter out there but hiding something is a great possibility, that’s what broke down the negotiations of the fight in the first place. To many excuses, too many smoke screens.

OSC: Do you think they will ever fight down the road?

JM: I don’t think the fight will ever happen because I feel that it will come down to the same thing that killed the first fight. It will go down in history as one of the biggest fights in history that never happened. Plus the time is now; strike while it’s hot, both sides will have their reason as to why the fight didn’t happen and both at the end of the day will be the blame for their own personal reasons.

OSC: Do you think Floyd should take a meaningful fight and move up in weight and take Corey Spinks IBF Jr. Middle title?

JM: I think a fight with Corey Spinks don’t really mean a great deal other than they both come from fighting families and that can be sold only off that spin. The better fights are at 147 still. The 154lb division is not strong at all but maybe it will happen. Floyd already won the title at that weight as well.

OSC: How much longer do you think Floyd will keep fighting before he retires for good? Another 2 or 3 good paydays?

JM: I have no idea as to how much longer he plans to fight but with the fight between Manny not happening will probably keep Floyd around a little longer than he originally planned.

OSC: If Pacquiao and Floyd ever do fight, do you think it will go the distance?

JM: I think it’s a fight that creates many possibilities. Manny would only have a very small window of opportunity, a punchers chance. Skill for skill he has no chance, it would be a replay of the Marquez fight all over again with Manny’s style there could be a knockout if Floyd catches him jumping in off both feet with reckless abandon, it could very well turn off the lights for him. Manny has a great deal of speed also and has a chance of catching Floyd as well. Floyd is Beverly Hills when it comes to his boxing style, Manny is Compton totally two different classes but both get the job done.

OSC: Do you feel Floyd and Pacquiao are really the blame or outside influences that really made this fight crumble?

JM: At the end of the day the blame starts with both fighters and then extends far beyond Promoters, both camps and just complete refusal to comply or take a step back on either side killed the fight.
