Ring no house organ for Oscar on Manny mud

MOST UNFAIR

Accusing Pacquiao of taking PEDs: Pacquiao doesn’t deserve this. The man lifted himself out of poverty to become the greatest boxer in the world and a hero to his countrymen, an inspiring story if there ever was one. To suggest that he did it with the help of performance-enhancing drugs with absolutely no proof –- as Floyd Mayweather Sr has done -– is a gross injustice. By all accounts, Pacquiao is one of the hardest workers ever to step into a gym. We have to assume that his work ethic and his natural gifts are responsible for his success unless concrete or even anecdotal evidence to the contrary emerges. So far, none has. Thus, we must assume that Pacquiao is perfectly clean and should celebrate his profound success.

I could let Ring editor-writer Michael Rosenthal’s words speak for themselves but permit me this brief amplification.

Sure, I have joked around about the Oscar de la Hoya owned and operated Ring magazine, long called “the Bible of boxing,” turning into a house organ for the Golden Boy.

But fair is fair one obviously veteran print journalist Rosenthal, formerly with the Los Angeles Daily News and then the San Diego Union Tribune, certaily showed his editorial integrity on this issue.

I applaud Rosenthal for not letting the name on his paycheck color his opinions and comments.

Fair is fair.
