When it was announced that Oxnard based trainer Robert Garcia would be working with Filipino flyweight titlist Nonito Donaire, eye brows were raised.
Garcia was already serving as trainer to junior flyweight titlist champion Brian Viloria and there had been speculation of Donaire and Viloria facing off sometime in the near future. The duo even have a bit of history following them from their days as world class amateurs.
Viloria’s girlfriend and Donaire’s wife traded barbs on the Internet earlier this week.
Not to worry about possible tensions, because the Viloria and Nonaire will not share a training camp.
Robert Garcia cleared the air during his Sunday night appearance on The Boxing Truth Radio, stating that his roll in with Nonito is that of a strategist. Garcia will not be handling the day to day training of Donaire, but mainly look at fight video of opponent February 13 opponent Gerson Guerrero.
Donaire vs. Guerrero takes place at the Las Vegas Hilton and will be broadcast on Top Rank Pay Per View.
Violria will fighting in the Philippines on January 23 against Jesus Iribe.
