Floyd Mayweather and Golden Boy promotions are still pushing for Manny Pacquiao to undergo extensive and unnecessary drug testing before their proposed showdown in March.
The sudden disagreement between the two fighters has put the fight in jeopardy of ever going ahead, with a stalemate looming if the sides can’t reach an agreement. Mayweather and his team are presumably insisting on blood tests for one of two reasons, either to back out of the fight or to use as a bargaining chip.
If Floyd is insistent on backing out of the fight, then he has found his golden ticket, because Pacquiao will not cave in to his testing demands. That being the case nothing Manny can offer Mayweather will be accepted, although of course a lot of money will be lost by both sides.
Yuri Foreman vs. Manny Pacquiao and Matthew Hatton vs. Floyd Mayweather just don’t have the same ring to them, and either fighter would be lucky to make a quarter of what they will if they fight each other.
Seemingly for the fight to happen Pacquiao will either have to concede, which won’t happen, or make Mayweather an offer he can’t refuse. The most obvious thing he could offer is a lesser penalty for Mayweather is he comes in over weight. The agreed penalty at the moment is reportedly $10 million per pound, not chump change by anyone’s standard.
Now to set the record completely straight, Pacquiao shouldn’t have to concede anything to Mayweather and his dirty tricks method of negotiating. He has been tested numerous times by a variety of athletic commissions and has never tested positive for anything.
For the fight to go ahead though Mayweather might be tempted if Pacquiao were to offer say $5 million per pound instead. A token offer considering this is still a lot of money, but something that Pacquiao could use to gain a lot of support from the media and fans.
Questions would be asked of Floyd along the lines of : If Manny is trying to make the fight happen by making counter offers, why aren’t you doing the same?
