The following are our responses to your comments based on personal opinion(s), research, information recently released, etc. We have not edited any of the readers’ comments.
It is of interest that since we posted our first mail bag, Maxboxing’s Steve Kim posted a very informative and explicit mano a mano with “Victor Conte – the man who chemically masterminded the success of various world-class athletes while running BALCO.”
The link to the interview is www.maxboxing.com/news/promo-lead/conte-weighs-in, and we strongly recommend you read it before posting about HGH and/or other issues that most of the fans have not quite understood. While we definitely encourage you to read the whole interview, we are going to borrow the following paragraph hoping it will begin to put things in perspective and make for a more educated approach to the Mayweather – Pacquiao situation.
Conte: ‘In my opinion, blood testing for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight is more important for detecting possible blood doping or use of EPO than it is for human growth hormone. Measuring hematocrit levels (percentage of red blood cells to total whole blood volume is very important. For example, even without a positive urine test for EPO, cyclists are temporarily suspended for two weeks if their hematocrit is greater than 50%. An elevated hematocrit can provide a significant advantage to a fighter by enhancing oxygen uptake and utilization. This would benefit a fighter in training and especially during the later rounds of a fight.’

Dear Gary: When negotiations are taking place, the parties involved have every right to make demands within the limitations allowed. There would be those who may ask where did Pacquiao get the idea to demand $10 million dollars for every pound Mayweather could be over the contracted catch weight? That amount of money is unheard of, but he made the request part of his negotiations, and Floyd Jr. accepted it. Same concept with the testing. If both fighters are clean, there shouldn’t be any problems, and for a guaranteed $25 million dollars, why make such an issue out of getting minute amounts of blood leading up to the fight? For that kind of money, and if I were clean, I wouldn’t have an issue accepting Mayweather’s proposal, you? The longer Pacquiao refuses, the more assorted the excuses that are floating around, the shadier he is beginning to look. And if you want to know more, read the Maxboxing story cited above and the explanation offered by a real expert on this matter, Victor Conte. If after doing all that you still think Manny is right and clean, I have a bridge I would like to sell you, it’s called the Brooklyn Bridge, and it’s located in Brooklyn, New York. Let me know…

Dear Jimmy: I am not quite sure who you are addressing this to, but I will say this… Don’t get in trouble…
Jimmy wrote: I don’t know why anyone would think PBFM would make weight he didnt in the Marquez fight and a few pound in a fight does make a difference but i think no matter Manny would still win knocking out a middle weight PBFM.
Dear Jimmy: Having to pay $10 million dollars for each pound Mayweather is over the contracted weight may be a good deterrent, and you are right, we don’t know. What we would know prior to fight night, however, and assuming that both parties agree to the Olympic type testing, is whether these fighters are squeaky clean. We can’t predict on the weight issue, but we can be assured that the mother of all fights would take place between two athletes who are CLEAN, otherwise referred to as playing on an even playing field. I’ll take it, how about you?
Jimmy also wrote: (wow, Jimmy stays busy!) This is my proof that Mayweather is a COWARD he said he wont fight Mosley because he is a washed up fighter trying to make it big off PBFM name .I am sorry but did we see what he did to Margarita if he was washed up the fight would be on.
Dear Jimmy: Long time no hear! Here is my reply to your latest post: I wouldn’t doubt that Mosley has knocked off a few Margaritas in his time, but back to boxing, Jimmy… Mayweather does not have an obligation to fight whomever you think he needs to fight, or does he? If not fighting Mosley -who has been accused of using illegal substances- makes Mayweather a coward in your eyes, then you really know little about boxing. There are a string of boxers out there who will not fight another fighter for X, Y or Z reason(s). (Check out the heavyweight division for starters). Would a coward sport a 40-0 record? I would think not…

Dear Tora tora tora: Your post is somewhat confusing, because I don’t believe that a fighter can go and take a test on his own to prove he is clean. There is a certain protocole that must be followed, I mean, there is enough chaos even when so-called rules and regulations are in place. I do agree with you on one thing, though… I too would take the test to shut down all doubts and suspicions.

Dear Jin: This great country of ours gives us the right to freedom of speech, and Tora tora tora has every right to be a Mayweather fan or a Pacquiao fan. Dear Gary: Not only I didn’t get the (sic) “semple illustration,” I have no clue what you are talking about. So, on that note, let’s part company for a long, long while if at all possible.
