Filching Manny Pacquiao’s good name worse than stealing

Iago: Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, Is the immediate jewel of their souls. Who steals my purse steals trash; ’tis something, nothing; ‘Twas mine, ’tis his, and has been slave to thousands; But he that filches from me my good name Robs me of that which not enriches him, And makes me poor indeed. Othello Act 3, scene 3, 155–161

At this point in Othello, our hero has just begun his precipitous fall into Iago’s intricate trap. Iago hints that one of Othello’s officers, Cassio, has been making time with Othello’s wife. On top of this innuendo he plasters a seeming reluctance to reveal the fictitious affair, because that would ruin Cassio’s reputation—and to “filch” from someone his good name is a much more serious crime than stealing his purse. Honor is an essential possession, something that can belong to you and to you only; your money, on the other hand, remains what it is even if thousands of others have handled and possessed it. Compared to honor, then, money is mere “trash.”

If you said something halfway clever to my personal idol Muhammad Ali, he nearly always would jab you with this wicked rejoinder, “You’re not as dumb as you look!”

“Liars go to hell. They should be man enough and own up to their words,” said Pacquiao, as he recalled information that pointed out to

Certainly, Manny has taken it extremely personally, as evidenced by this quote which his publicity guy Winchell “No Donuts” Campos has circulated:

“Liars go to hell. They should be man enough and own up to their words,” said Pacquiao.

Isn’t Pacman, the Pinoy Idol, entitled to take it “personally” when there has been a cabal of gypsies, tramps and thieves who have conspired to trash Pacquiao’s reputation, to paint him as a drug cheater.

And this is a fighter who is batting a thousand, who is 10 for 10 in passing postfight drug tests in the state of Nevada.

If de la Hoya and Schaefer want to promote a new sport, may I suggest pool, dirty pool?

This degradation, the irreparable trashing of Pacquiao’s reputation, has been accomplished and there is no turning back the clock to when Manny was universally viewed as a humble hero, a Filipino icon who overcame abject poverty, early pro ring defeats and more to become a world champion in seven different weight divisions.

People have stolen money from Pacquiao including some people he had working for him in boxing and in other capacities.

But those thefts were cases of petty larceny considering the amassed wealth of the brown-skinned kid from GenSan.

What’s gone down with Manny’s heretofore sterling reputation is felony robbery.

Schaefer and Oscar should publiclty apologize and recant their snide remarks, comments and poisionous innuendo about Pacman.

It just makes it more obscene that whether Manny fights Mayweather, Malignaggi, Foreman or Mickey Mouse next, plenty of loot will be funneled per the out of court settlement with Top Rank into the bulging pockets of Schaefer and de la Hoya.

You can’t, as I said, put the good reputation genie back in the bottle.

But the Golden Twins, uneducated Oscar and the highly educated former Swiss banker, have shame in their game.

I refuse to call either one dumb or as dumb as they look.

But, no doubt, they are meaner, more vicious, than they look.

Mirror, mirror on the wall…who’s the most unfair of all?

They have filched Pacman’s good name.

The money comes, the money goes but the good name can never be fully repaired.
