James Toney praised Pacquiao and Mayweather for putting boxing where it is now. The former heavyweight champion also shared his views on the state of boxing and suggested how to keep the public’s interest in future boxing events. In a recent interview with Hardcore Sports Radio, Toney said that “there are two people in the boxing world that people wanted to see. It is Pacquiao and Mayweather. Pacquiao does what he is supposed to do – make boxing exciting. We have Mayweather who is a defensive genius, who runs around the ring and makes the fight boring. And yet people still pay to watch him fight.” The last two boxing pay per views has absolutely dismantled the UFC in terms viewership. The two boxing pay per view numbers reached two million. It goes on to show that boxing is riding a momentum. Boxing is more healthy than people are talking about right now. It is far from dead. Thanks to Manny and Money. Toney also mentioned that UFC had great undercards while boxing has low quality undercards. They put those extra fights for the fans. “We have to have a good undercard. It is one way to keep people interested in boxing.You go to Las Vegas. The place is three quarters empty until three minutes before the main event.” said James Toney.
