Enough is enough.
Promoter, Gary Shaw, desperatlely wants major reform in the sport when it comes to judging. Among the most dubious scorecards was the 118-110 scorecard turned in by Gale Van Hoy, in favor of Juan Diaz during his first bout against Paulie Malignaggi. Shaw says of that card, “Some people thought there was maybe more to it than just a bad decision. Only Gale Van Hoy will ever know that.”
More recent scoring shenanigans involved the Funeka-Guzman bout, which was ruled a draw despite Funeka seeming to win easily, and the boldly out of place 119-110 scorecard in favor of Paul Williams for his recent victory over Sergio Martinez. According to Shaw:
“The worst thing is that the public will lose confidence in the sport by believing the very worst, that boxing is again fixed, as it was suspected in the late 1940s and ’50s….that’s the danger we’re in right now.”
Shaw proposes a possible solution. He thinks it should be like a trial’s jury selection process where promoters pick or veto names from a list, “That would be the most perfect way. Both camps would have a say, not in picking the official, but excluding officials…then if something goes wrong, what can I say?”
