CEBUANO teenager Johnreil Casime-ro impressively demolished former world champion Cesar Canchila and captured the interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight yesterday at the Estadio Nacional in Managua, Nicaragaua
Casimero, 19, not only upset the more experienced Canchila but also dominated the whole fight.
Casimero knocked down Canchila twice in the 11th round before the referee put a halt to the bout.
He also sent the 27-year-old Columbian to the canvass in the third, sixth and ninth rounds.
With the victory, Casimero improved his clean slate to 14 wins with eight knockouts while Canchila fell to 28-3 with 22 knockouts.
Second
Casimero is the second 19-year-old Filipino fighter to win a world title this year. The other teenage pugilist was Marvin Sonsona, who defeated Jose Lopez for the WBO super flyweight crown last Sept. 4 in Canada. However, Sonsona’s reign was short-lived as he was stripped of the crown after coming in overweight in his first title defense against Alejandro Hernandez last month in Canada, which ended in a draw.
Casimero now joins the ranks of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, WBO mini-flyweight king Donnie Nietes, interim World Boxing Association super flyweight titlist Nonito Donaire, International Boxing Federation light flyweight titleholder Brian Viloria and World Boxing Council light flyweight ruler Rodel Mayol as the present world champions of the Philippines.
Challenger
On the other hand, another undefeated young Filipino fighter will be gunning for a world championship as Ciso Morales faces WBO bantamweight titleholder Fernando Montiel in the “Pinoy Power 3” Boxing event on Feb. 13 in Las Vegas.
It was reported at Philboxing.com that the 21-year-old Morales will be taking Z Gorres’s place as the new challenger for Montiel.
Gorres was originally scheduled to face Montiel in a rematch but the 27-year-old ALA Gym star suffered a brain injury that ended his boxing career.
