On August 21 1981, Mexican featherweight champ Salvador Sanchez stepped into the ring at Caesar?s Palace in Las Vegas against undefeated knockout artist and junior featherweight king Wilfredo Gomez of Puerto Rico. Gomez had 32 wins and 32 knockouts and was now moving up to featherweight in order to stake his claim of the division. Sanchez, a well regarded featherweight champ would stomp the feared boricua and odds on favorite with a spectacular eighth round knockout. It was Sal Sanchez?s finest moment. A moment that helped define a burgeoning career. One of those moments every fighter risks his life and health for. Almost a year later Sanchez would perish in an auto accident at the age of 23.
