8CountNews caught up with the NEW WBC Jr Flyweight world champion, Rodel Mayol. The newly crowned champion was still in Mexico at the airport, but took time to do the interview. Mayol defeated now former world champion Edgar Sosa via 2nd round TKO. This victory enables the Philippines to add yet one more of their own to their growing list of world champions. Mayol informs 8CN that more than likely his first title defense will be against Edgar Sosa in a rematch, but plans to go to the Philippines to hook up with Manny Pacquiao and to celebrate this victory well before that happens. Mayol is a class act gentleman and we at 8CountNews are very proud of his accomplishment.
8CN – Congratulations Rodel.
RM – Thank you very much Brad for again making this interview happen here at 8CountNews.com.
8CN – We are very proud of you. Talk about your TKO victory over now former world champion Edgar Sosa.
RM – I want to thank my corner and of course I would like to thank Freddie Roach, and the Wild Card Gym. I prepared hard for this fight, I did a good job. I did good last night, I won the fight!
8CN – Were you surprised that the victory came so quickly?
RM – I saw in his face that he had difficulty making the weight. He looked drained, so I said to myself that I feel good about beating him because he looked so weak and drained. I think he had a problem making the weight.
8CN – So you were able to tell just by looking at him that he didn’t make the weight properly?
RM – Yes, he had no power in the 1st round. When he hit me full force, it was not too powerful. At that time I knew that I could handle his power. I also noticed that his quickness was no more.
8CN – So how does it feel to be world champion?
RM – I feel very very happy, at last! Thank you to Manny Pacquiao for giving me this fight. He is the one that took this fight for me, so I thank him. I also want to congratulate Manny on his victory over Miguel Cotto. I will celebrate this victory in the Philippines with Manny Pacquiao.
8CN – So you plan on going to the PI to celebrate?
RM – Yes I will go to see my family, they miss me a lot. Now I will go see them as a world champion. I might meet the president of the Philippines, and maybe we will have a celebration over there.
8CN – Now you’re a world champ, so when will you defend your title? Do you know yet?
RM – They said that we will give Edgar Sosa a rematch. I tell them anytime we will fight, just call us. I will be ready, now I am a champion and I will train hard to keep this belt. I will always be ready for wherever and whenever the fight is. Maybe in March or April we will do the rematch. I heard that Sosa has an injury, so we’ll see when he can recover.
8CN – Have you had a chance to speak with Manny yet?
RM – Not yet, I am still in Mexico but when I get back to Los Angeles, I will talk to Manny.
8CN – What are your thoughts on Manny’s victory over Cotto.
RM – Well last time you interviewed me Brad I predicted a late round knockout for Manny Pacquiao. He did it, and when he did it I got very inspired by his win. I told the fans in Mexico that I am inspired. The Mexican fans like Manny Pacquiao, he is very famous down here. I told them all that because Manny won I have even more confidence in my fight to win.
8CN – The Mexican fans treated you well down there huh?
RM – Yes very well. They are very good fans, and don’t care I am Filipinio. I want to thank the Mexican Fans, they are great fans and I thank them too.
8CN – Congratulations Rodel, do you have any closing thoughts?
