I for one don’t want to see another Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez fight. They have already fought each other three times in a 12 – month period.
Each was a Fight of the Year candidate.
They have taken 16 months off each to recover and have various eye surgeries before Vazquez took a tune up Saturday night. Vazquez won, but suffered another serious cut over his left eye.
These two warriors are being positioned to fight each other again and it’s a shame. I doubt their combined purses for their trilogy matches the one- night purse of recent heavyweight challenger Chris Arreola. Arreola is a fighter of very few skills and personal discipline compared to these two. Their promoter, Gary Shaw, might see things differently and someone should call him on a carpet.
The California State Athletic Commission is in such political disarray that it can’t protect the fighters or the consumers from a fourth fight.
Perhaps the Association of Boxing Commissions should at least step up and be heard.
Perhaps Showtime Network should consider passing on it.
I have no issue with their right to make a living. But someone should have the authority and good sense to say no to this particular fight. Because someone is going to get hurt.
Other trilogies that I remember for their intensity, but didn’t cause the damage to the particular fighters that Vazquez – Marquez has include the 20 – month trilogy of Michael Carbajal vs. Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez and the epic 13 – month Arturo Gatti vs. Mickey Ward.
Too much of a good thing could be deadly if not criminal.
