If Manny Pacquiao says, “Just get the weights close enough, I want the Mayweather fight,” I think we might have a great fight on our hands and forget what I wrote in part one. Although Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought to a draw and a split decision in their two fights at 130, Pacquaio has a much greater chance of beating Mayweather than Marquez ever did.
Marquez is a counter puncher. He certainly has world class offensive skills, but in big fights he goes defensive, which was his downfall in the Mayweather fight.
We know Mayweather is a counter puncher. So a good big man beat an older little man.
Here comes one of boxing’s greatest offensive arsenals, Manny Pacquiao. What separates Pacquiao from other Hall of Fame offensive fighters? He doesn’t get countered. His offense is so fast and accurate that the last thing an opponent can do is mount a counter as Manny steps back out of punching range.
I have not even factored in that Pacquiao is a deadly, tenacious finisher. Maybe an all – time great when it comes to determination alone.
If this is the case, than this fight has to happen. But it’s a big if. It would be the top two recognized pound for pound fighters in the world, both future Hall of Famers, in their primes with a weight difference that can’t be overcome but can be neutralized for about a half hour.
This would be the first time this has happened since the first Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor fight March 17, 1990. We’re talking Halley’s Comet rarity here. And we’re still talking about that fight.
I don’t mean Pacquiao can leap in with an amateurish lead right hook because of his speed like Roy Jones, Jr used to do with his left. He can jump in and get off a three to four punch combination without getting seriously countered. This is why his career has lasted so long.
If Manny’s offensive aggressiveness can negate the size and weight matter, along with the brunt of the Mayweather counter punching arsenal, I don’t see how Mayweather can beat Pacquiao.
If Mayweather can put up a fight (and I think he has the heart) after the serious Pacquiao offensive onslaught, then the promoters simply couldn’t charge us enough money to watch this sacred, spectacular event.
However, if Mayweather, by hook or by crook, keeps Manny off of of him, than Mayweather can stink out the place with an easy points win.
Now for this scenario to happen, these two have to fight in the next 12 to 18 months while they are still in their relative primes and not one or two fights out of it.
Either way, the speculation will provide pundits and fans many enjoyable hours of dreaming for this fight to happen.
Part one is why the fight shouldn’t happen because of the weight difference and part two is if we delude ourself that the weight difference can be neutralized we can have a great fight.
