I have been accused of many things. Floyd Mayweather fans have called me a ‘Hater’ and they have called me me a biased Pacquiao fan. But one thing is for sure now, after Mayweather-Marquez did 1 million PPV buys. Floyd Mayweather is a superstar. Love him or hate him. He is a money maker. Now the question you have to ask is. Where can Floyd make the most money in the future? He really only has 2 options. Is it with Manny Pacquiao, or Sugar Shane Mosley? Or maybe both? Let’s take a look.
Manny Pacquiao
The 1st thing people will say is why didn’t you put Miguel Cotto in the debate. Here is the reason. I think Pacquiao is going to win in November, and if for some reason Pacquiao loses, I think you will see Cotto in the ring with Antonio Margarito before he ever fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. So let’s look at a Manny Pacquiao fight.
This is the biggest fight in boxing. It could be the biggest money fight in the history of the sport. It has the potential to do 2 million or more PPV buys. But the biggest question here is who gets the bulk share. Mayweather supporters will point to his greater number of PPV sales, and Pacquiao fans will point to his higher number of ticket sales. So in the end, in my opinion, neither will get more then 50/50 if this fight is agreed upon.
In the end, this fight would give each fighter at least 25 million dollars. The question is will it happen? I believe it will. Who will win? I will wait until after Pacquiao-Cotto to give my take on that.
Sugar Shane Mosley
This is the 2nd biggest fight to be made in boxing right now. And after last’s week in the ring fiasco. It is probably as big as this fight as ever been.
The total pot of this fight will not be the same as Mayweather-Pacquiao. But Mayweather still would make a huge sum of money for this fight, if not the same or more. And the reason is simple. He would get at the very least at 70-30 or 75-25 split in his favor against Mosley.
And if Maywather-Marquez did 1 million buys. Mayweather-Mosley does more. And here is why, You would get a tremendous draw from the African American audience and the mainstream sports audience. Plus I still think you would draw the latino sports audience(to a lesser extent) that Mayweather-Marquez draw into, because of the great respect for both fighters. I think it would do between 1.2 to 1.4 million buys.
In the end with splits being what they are, Mayweather would make 20 to 25 million fighting Mosley, maybe more.
For Mosley he would stand to make 6 million or more. I know it may hurt his ego a little. But the question, is would he rather make 6 plus million fighting Mayweather in Feb. or March, or 2 million fighting Andre Berto in Jan. Seems like common sense to me.
What will Money Mayweather do
He will make a huge amount money fighting both guys. My advice to him would be to fight Mosley first. Make your 20 million plus. Then should you win(it is a very winnable fight) a Pacquiao fight would be even bigger, as it would be for the undisputed Welterweight Championship.
If he fights both in this order he stands to be one of the wealthiest fighters in history. But if just waits for Pacquiao, Mosley may have lost to Andre Berto or someone else, and he would not make as much money. In 2010 Mayweather could make over 60 million dollars. Now Richard Schaefer just has to convince to him fight Mosley first. Too bad Floyd, Leonard Ellerbe, and Al Haymon won’t listen.
