Following this past Saturday’s bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez, “Sugar” Shane Mosley went fishing.
He brought his fishing pole, can of worms, and a harpoon with him inside the ring during Mayweather’s post-fight interview. Shane was looking for a fight and by all accounts… he should get one with the newly crowned pound-for-pound kingpin.
While Mosley is coming off an eye-opening victory over the seemingly unstoppable force that was Antonio Margarito, he’s still a very beatable opponent.
Looking at Shane’s past six fights, there is nothing within those bouts that points to him being able to deal with the type of fighter that Mayweather has become. Two farce bouts against Fernando Vargas proved absolutely nothing.
Mosley-Collazo had to be one of the most competitive, “one-sided” bout of Mosley’s career. In rewatching the first half of that fight, I don’t understand when fight fans clamor about Shane’s dominant performance in that bout. I understand that HBO loves Shane Mosley but the truth is in what I see, not in what they say.
Following his bout with the New York-based southpaw, Shane had a perceived “close” fight against Miguel Cotto. It was a fight in which Mosley would clinch excessively and at times up to 14 or 15 times per round to negate the Puerto Rican’s offensive onslaught. Remember people… John Ruiz had “close” fights with Evander Holyfield.
In September of 2008, Mosley-Mayorga would take place in what was a miserable affair up until the knockout at the end the bout. Shane would go on to blame the Nicaraguan for his awkward style which led to the excessive holding the poor spectators witnessed. This is complete and utter bullshit as neither Oscar De la Hoya nor Felix Trinidad had these types of issues with the pimple-faced Ricardo.
Once again… in early 2009 Mosley utilized his effective punch & clinch style to nullify the offense of punching maching Antonio Margarito. Being the faster man, Shane would punch before Antonio and immediately as well as consistently clinch so that the Mexican banger couldn’t return any fire or sustain any sort of rythm.
Here’s a video of the drinking game we played during that fight.
Havine recapped Mosley’s past six performances and having guaged were Mayweather currently stands in his own career, as the advisor of the “Pretty Boy”, I advise him to sign to fight Shane Mosley.
It’s a fight that might be able to generate some decent revenue and should quell the gripes of most fight fans clamoring that Floyd picks on weak opponents. While I feel as though Mosley is an extremely beatable adversary for Mayweather, the general public doesn’t feel that way and that is what counts in boxing.
Smokescreens, mirrors, and mesh fishnets my friends…
