ALA watches Milan’s mettle

ALTHOUGH ALA boy Milan Melindo is highly ranked in all four major boxing sanctioning bodies, ALA Promotions isn’t rushing him for a crack at a world title. However, the outcome of Melindo’s upcoming bout with world-rated Mexican Ivan Meneses on Oct. 3 at the Cuneta Astrodome could be his promoter’s gauge if he is ripe for a world championship bout.

“We will focus on this fight first and see if he is ready for a world championship,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.

World title

Aldeguer said that if Melindo performs impressively then they will consider the 21-year-old boxer battling for a world title.

“We’ll see how he is at 108. He is facing a tough opponent that is ranked in the world,” said Aldeguer.

Aldeguer said that it is possible that Melindo would move up a weight class and campaign at the light flyweight category because he believes that the ALA boy is more comfortable at the 108-pound category.

Melindo is ranked No.1 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO), fifth at the World Boxing Council (WBC) and third at both the World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) as a mini-flyweight. On the other hand, Meneses is rated No. 8 in the WBC, 11th in the WBO and 12th in the WBA.

Ranks

Aldeguer hopes that Melido will retain his ranks in the light flyweight category.

Melindo is undefeated with 18 wins and five knockouts while Meneses possesses a professional boxing slate of 14 wins, five defeats and a draw with eight knockouts.

Meanwhile, veteran ALA fighter Michael Domingo (38-14-2, 16 KO’s) is also looking for a break in his career. He will be facing former world title challenger Jose Navarro (26-4, 12 KO’s) in one of the toughest tests as a professional boxer.
