On the Mark: Bacolod Banger Melligan zaps Zepeda

Mighty Mark Melligan was given a human punch bag opponent and he made the most out of it on the “Pinoy Power 2” show, scoring a bloody fourth round stoppage over Mexican journeyman Ernesto Zepeda.

Zepeda, age 32, had a bloody face and was dropped to the canvas when referee Joe Cortez called a halt to the scheduled 10-rounder at the 2:40 mark.

The Bacolod Banger ran his pro record 16-1, 12 knockouts, and extended his winning streak to 10 in a row.

Melligan, who is age 23, weighed in at 145 pounds, same as the opponent from Tijuana.

Melligan started in exploding with his punches in the third round.

You think promoter Bob Arum has high hopes for Melligan?

It looked like Arum, turning 78 in December, pole vaulted into the ring to pose for photos with Melligan.

Southpaw Melligan, as his record indicates, has phenomenal power but I did see some rough edges that hopefully trainer Tony Martin can smooth out.

Zepeda took the fight on 10 days notice and his belly looked the part.
