Distractions, that’s what some wishful thinkers say will bring down Manny Pacquiao.
He’s making movies. He writes his Kumbinayson newspaper column. He is gearing up his political machinery for a run for elective office in Sarrangani.
He hobnobs with others who are rich and famous. For tax purposes, he may begin training in the Bahamas or Mexico. Those plans seem uncertain.
His Nov. 14 opponent, the formidable WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, is already in the gym and has begun the arduous work for their big PPV bout.
But I’m beginning to think (always a dangerous action for the WG) that it is archenemy Floyd Mayweather Jr. who is the real, bona fide distracted fighter on the eve his key comeback bout Sept. 19 against Pacman nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez.
Let me explain why, treehuggers, Pachuggers and those of you like the poor shut-in Floydfan#1 who simply need a warm hug.
His trainer, Uncle Roger, has just checked in and out of his home away from home, the Clark County Jail.
Instead of the HBO 24/7 infomercials, Roger’s next TV gig may be on “Lamp Unto My Feet” after he allegedly viciously attacked female boxer Melissa “Guard Your Grill” St. Vil. The lady boxer, according to Las Vegas police, smashed Roger in the head with a lamp but he was still able to start choking her neck.
As I wrote in a previous column, this is just another Mayweather in jail, need bail situation.
The Mayweathers give new meaning to the phrase “cell phone.”
Besides, it’s August when Americans go on vacation but the Mayweathers go on probation.
Now it turns out, according to Allhiphop.com., that the titular head of Philthy Rich Records, meaning Pretty Boy Floyd, has “beef” with Miami rap superstar Rick “The Boss” Ross.
See this story on that site as written by Ismael Abdu Salaam.
Ross, who also seems to have “beef” with L’il Floyd’s rapping pal Fifty Centavos, poked some fun at Mayweather’s well documented financial problems, saying in a recording that “Mayweather money looking funny in the light.”
Mayweather doesn’t expect jabs at him from the hip hop world and doesn’t appreciate Ross’ lines.
Speaking to Salaam, Mayweather disrespected Ross’ rapping skills. He also charged that Ross “fronts” as a streetwise ghetto hustler but is really a former cop or corrections officer.
“Cassidy already did ‘I’m a Hustla,’ [and] he’s an East Coast rapper. That’s already been done. Freeway already came out with the beard look. And then the real Rick Ross was really getting it as a hustler,” Mayweather explained to AllHipHop.com. “I don’t have to take no shots at Rick Ross. I don’t think he’s making $20-$30 million every time he goes out there to perform. I got my own name, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. That’s original. With his rap career, I wish him nothing but the best.
“[His] stats and credentials don’t rhyme. One minute he said he wasn’t a CO or cop, next minute he is,” Mayweather told AllHipHop.com. “He can learn how to get money from me. If he’s a cop and rapping about selling drugs, I guess he was a dirty cop! You know me, I’m not ducking and dodging no one, it’s not hard to find me. I’m in Miami all the time, Atlanta, everywhere.”
Them Mayweather dug his own verbal body shot into the hefty Ross.
“Rap has truly changed. He was at my Hatton fight, cheering me on. I guess he got upset because I’m cool with 50 Cent. But like I said, if I need someone arrested I’ll call him.”
These distractions may bode well for Marquez come fight night.
Not only should Mayweather have sore ribs (remember that sketchy injury?), he also has “beef.”
Who do you feel has worse distractions, Manny or Floyd?
And will they matter when the bell rings first on Sept. 19 and then on Nov. 14?
InquIring minds want to know.
