Juan Manuel Marquez, the reigning International Boxing Federation/World Boxing Association featherweight champion wants Manny Pacquiao to fight him.
This is before Pacquiao takes on legendary featherweight Marco Antonio Barrera in a rematch that the Mexican says he wants after a tune-up fight in March, according to James Blears of the popular Web site Boxing Scene.
Marquez, who is scheduled to fight Armenian William Abelyan in a mandatory IBF title defense at the end of February, was quoted as saying ?I?d like to fight Pacquiao in May or June before the rematch against Barrera. Manny did well against the fighter regarded as the best featherweight in the world but I?ve got two world championship belts and that counts more.?
He said his preference was to fight the boxers, who had beaten Barrera, recognized as ?The People?s Featherweight Champion.?
The tough Mexican said he then wants ?to unify all the four major championships.?
