JAMES ?BUDDY? McGirt has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Freddie Roach as chief trainer of featherweight king Manny Pacquiao even as the Filipino champion?s handlers moved to salvage their relationship with Roach.
The name of McGirt, a former world junior-welterweight and welter champion, came up just a day after reports came out that the famed Roach has decided to quit Pacquiao?s camp in utter disgust over the way people are handling the champ?s affairs.
?Of course, I still want Freddie because I respect him very much and Manny really wants him,? said Rod Nazario, Pacquiao?s business manager. ?But if he doesn?t want to get back, what can we do? We have to look for a new trainer.?
Nazario?s son Roberto, who is based in San Francisco, talked with Roach yesterday morning and was assured by Roach that he would stick it out with the Filipino lefty.
