Busy September for ALA Boys

ALA boys Donnie Nietes and Mark Jason Millegen have already fought on Mexican grounds and were both successful. Now, one of their stable mates, Z Gorres ,will try his luck in Mexico on Sept. 5.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said he learned that Gorres, one of their prized fighters, will be included in a huge boxing event promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions, as an undercard for the postponed fight of undefeated Mexican combatant Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Jason Lehoullier in Mexico.

“We are more than willing to accept this fight because it is a big card,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Upon hearing the news, Aldeguer sent an e-mail to Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler about this plan. Aldeguer is expecting a reply from Top Rank this week.

There were two other schedules that Top Rank was considering for Gorres.

One was in the “Pinoy Power 2” card in Las Vegas, which will feature the world title fight of former world titlist Nonito Donaire Jr. The other one was the September date in the Philippines, which is headed by International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight king Brian Viloria and two-division world champion Gerry Pe?alosa.

“We are looking at all the angles for Z Gorres,” Aldeguer said.

According to Aldeguer, the “Pinoy Power 2” fight card is already out of the picture because the line-up has already been finalized.

However, ALA Promotions is more inclined on Gorres fighting in Mexico because it will give him an opportunity to be known internationally.

“He has fought too long here in the Philippines and he has fought some of the best fighters. It will be good for him to fight abroad so that he will be exposed internationally,” he said.

On the other hand, Aldeguer disclosed that highly-rated Filipino pugilist Milan Melindo will be slated in the Top Rank’s powerhouse September card.

“Milan will definitely be in the card. We are still under negotiations and the details are yet to be finalized,” he said.

Promoters are planning on pitting Melindo against another Filipino boxer, Denver Cuello.

Aldeguer said that it would be a good match-up but he believes that his undefeated ward has a lot to lose in this fight including his world rating.

“Denver Cuello is a good opponent. He is one of the good Filipino fighters,” he said. “Milan has everything to lose while Cuello has only little to lose in this fight.”

The 21-year-old Melindo (18-0, 5 KOs) is ranked highly in all four major boxing sanctioning bodies. He is ranked No.1 in the World Boxing Organization, fifth in the World Boxing Council and third in both the IBF and World Boxing Association in the 105-pound weight class.
