Over the last century some of the world’s greatest athletes have hung up their professional athletic careers for aspirations of becoming successful politicians. Arguably two of the greatest athletes in their respective sports, boxing’s Manny Pacquiao and long-time pro-wrestler Jerry Lawler are following in this historical line of athletes turned politicians.
Jerry Lawler has held over 140 championships in his illustrious pro-wrestling career. He’s spent the last 15 years or so as one of the voices for WWE’s Monday Night RAW and as a part-time wrestler for the WWE. Last week, Lawler officially announced that he will run for Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee. This is his second attempt. Previously, he unsuccessfully ran for mayor back in 1999 and finished with only 12% of the votes.
Manny Pacquiao is currently boxing’s pound-for-pound greatest fighter in the world. He has won 5 world titles in 5 different weight classes. Manny has been quoted as saying he would retire from boxing for a life of politics. In 2007, Manny ran for congressional seat to represent the 1st district of South Cotabato but lost by almost a 2 to 1 margin.
Both Lawler and Pacquiao had unsuccessful attempts for their first bids into the world of politics. But, both men have reached high success and fame in their homelands, Pacquiao in the Philippines and Lawler in Memphis, Tennessee, and have great chances in their second bids.
There’s plenty of optimism for Lawler’s camp of a potential victory. He’s one of Memphis’ favorite sons and provides a freshness to the norm. The same can be said for Pacquiao. His unique fame and stardom can make a difference in his home land. I believe when Manny finally retires from boxing, he will become a very successful politician. Both men share a love and desire to help their people. In my opinion, that’s the greatest attribute a politician could have.
