ONE of the best young prospects of the Philippines, Marvin Sonsona, has been acquired by famed international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz in his Sampson Boxing Promotions promotional outfit.
Famed international promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who promotes Sonsona locally, confirmed yesterday that the highly-rated Filipino boxer will formal sign with Sampson Boxing Promotions on July 25 in Manila.
“Yes. We agreed under Sampson Boxing Promotions,” Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Gello-ani believes that Lewkowicz can mold Sonsona’s promising career with fights abroad.
“I trust Sampson Lewkowicz. I’m happy that we have associated with him. He is a very good matchmaker. He always gives opportunity to prospected fighters. I’m comfortable with him,” said Gello-ani, who has worked with Lewkowicz on a lot of occasions.
Prospects
Lewkowicz is well known for convincing Murad Muhammad to sign pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao when the Filipino superstar was still a struggling boxer. He also saw Pacquiao as a future superstar, which came true. Gello-ani believes the same thing with Sonsona, who he thinks is a special kid.
“It might be a repetition of what happened to Manny Pacquiao,” said Gello-ani.
Fight details
Lewkowicz will be arriving in Manila on July 24. He will be announcing the final details of Sonsona’s upcoming fight, a possible title tiff against World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion Jose “Carita” Lopez either in Miami or Canada.
Gello-ani is confident that the undefeated Sonsona has a huge chance of stealing the world title from the 37-year-old Lopez.
“Lopez is getting old. If it wasn’t ‘Carita’ Lopez we would have thought about it. ‘Carita’ Lopez is ‘Carita’ Lopez and not Juanma (Juan Manuel Lopez),” he said. “This will be a breakthrough for him, this will be his opportunity to become a world champion.”
Sonsona is ranked No.6 as a super flyweight by WBO, and 12th in both the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation as a flyweight.
