IF all goes well with their negotiation, former world champion Gerry Pe?alosa will face Daniel Ponce De Leon in a rematch here in the Philippines on Aug 29.
According to Rex “Wakee” Salud, of the three fighters the Cebuano is eyeing, De Leon is the closest who can land a fight with the veteran Pe?alosa.
“There’s a big possibility of Gerry facing De Leon but it depends on the price,” Salud told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.
The fighters targeted by the 36-year-old Penalosa as his next opponent are De Leon, highly-rated former world champion Eric Morel and veteran ex-world titlist Jorge Arce.
However, Morel and Arce are already out of the picture.
“Morel is in prison, while Arce is asking too much,” said Salud.
Pe?alosa lost by unanimous decision against the 28-year-old De Leon in their world title match on March 17, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
De Leon was the World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion at that time until he was dethroned by hard-hitting Puerto Rican warrior Juan Manuel Lopez last year.
Pe?alosa is 54-7-2 with 36 knockouts, while De Leon is 36-2 with 31 KOs.
Pe?alosa is off from a 10th round stoppage loss to Lopez, while De Leon is fresh from a unanimous decision win over Marlon Aguilar.
