Reflection on the past year is a bit like Monday morning quarterbacking, but we did get some insight as to what the new year can bring in the sport of boxing. January will kick off what could be one of the best years boxing has seen in a least twenty. That is providing some of the leaders in the sport step up and fight instead of posture. Manny Pacquiao could lead us to a unified featherweight championship providing he gets some tax issues resolved and doesn?t let his new found fame clutter his focus.
Already we see the money end of the business dictating his schedule. I don?t have a problem with a fighter getting all he can for a bout, but lets face it, Pac-man won one fight against a peoples champion, he did not beat anyone for a featherweight title. Manny outworked and bested a great fighter yes, did he suddenly do enough to dictate the terms of a contract to fight a reigning champ, probably not in the real world of business but in the current state of boxing perhaps.
