Floyd Mayweather Jr. sees himself as the ultimate ring rebel.
He sees himself as making “creative moves” such as buying his way out of promoter Bob Arum’s contract.
He sees himself as not only the greatest fighter of the present but also the smartest (saying “is you ready” doesn’t advance that pose) the slickest and the most charismatic.
In his addled mind, nobody gets over on “Money May,” just the opposite. It’s Pretty Boy Floyd who gets over on everybody, including the public, like the proverbial fat rat.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a rebel all right, a rebel without a clue.
He’s more idiot than idiot savant.
And he’s so out of tune with the times that might as well be wearing bell bottom pants and using Gloria Gaynor’s disco anthem, “I Will Survive,” as his ring entrance theme music.
To Mayweather, the world beyond his pearly gates of a 50,000 square foot mansion complete with plush movie theater is filled with chumps, suckers and fools, people worthy only to be “played.”
When greed was considered good, a fighter named “Money May” was right in step with the times.
He was Gordon Gekko of “Wall Street” in boxing trunks. He spoke incessantly about the do-re-mi with the accent on the “me.”
But now increasingly, Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr., whose only joy seems to be flashing cash, owing millions of dollars to the hounds of the IRS or just talking about his self perceived worth, is what is known as an anachronism.
Wikipedia gives these examples of anachronisms:
The intentional usage of older, often obsolete cultural artifacts over newer ones can be regarded as anachronistic. For example, it could be considered anachronistic for a modern-day person to wear a top-hat, write with a quill pen, or use a typewriter. This choice may reflect an eccentricity, aesthetic preference, or an ethical acceptance or rejection of the societal role of that artifact.
We live in the midst of what may be a prolonged recession. We live in an era when a loudmouth who is boasting all about I’ve Got Mine is unseemly and not appreciated.
I thought about this while Mayweather rambled on and on and on and on…on an international media conference call on Tuesday.
First of all, Mayweather’s chip on the shoulder, nasty attitude towards the most innocuous of questions is an anachronism.
Like a little child, he ducks and dodges legitimate questions almost better than he avoids punches inside the ring.
Question, are you having financial problems including massive debt to Uncle Sam?
Answer, Don’t be ridiculous, I am in my 50,000 square foot house with the plush move theater.
Question, that rib injury was it suffered in sparring and, if so, against whom?
Answer, It was a freak accident, leave it at that.
Question, what are the contracts weights for your Sept. 19 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez?
Answer, If I told you, I would have to have my Oddjob (portly Laughing Lenny Ellerbe) terminate you.
I guess it’s really Mayweather’s unmitigated arrogance which seals the deal for anyone who is leaning towards disliking him.
He haughtily offered to throw Juan Ma million dollar step aside fee if Manny Pacquiao wants to fight him next.
This is transparently disingenuous and, even if it was real, how does Money Man know Marquez would rather pocket that loose change than fight him.
Not to mention how cheap that offer and ploy come off in the public eye. After all, if Mayweather (ha ha) is getting $15 million to fight Marquez why would the Mexican ringmaster accept 1/15 of that to release Floyd from the contract?
Mayweather sounded like the birds outside my window, cheep, cheep, cheep.
Mayweather also played his usual throw a rock and hide the hand games with Pacman promoter and his former promoter, Bob Arum.
He did not exactly hurl any verbal bombs. They were more like wet firecrackers.
Among his stones thrown at Uncle Bob:
–Arum owes him money from his Zab Judah and Arturo Gatti fights dating back four years, no proof was offered.
–Arum has “people in his pocket” in Vegas, which must mean the referees and judges, but no proof was offered.
–Arum rips Pacquiao off, that Manny only retains 27 percent of what he should get from his fights while Mayweather gets 100 percent of his revenue. I mean, geez Louise, I guess Richie Rich Schaefer, adviser Al Haymon and Laughing Leonard all work for free like the Carmelite nuns. No proof was offered.
I’ve known Arum 40 years. I’ve never gotten him mixed up with Mother Teresa but where’s the proof, Floyd? You first became Philthy Rich under Arum’s promotional banner.
Mayweather launched Philthy Rich Records but he has no known rappers or hits to show for it.
Mayweather launched Mayweather Promotions but he is promoted by Golden Boy and his lone fighter is a sparring partner named Wes Ferguson.
Away from boxing, Mayweather is what Donald Trump is if Trump owned no property.
Mayweather had a niche for himself as a somewhat likable if not lovable villain.
He was the Man You Love To Hate, like the bad guy in pro rasslin’.
But somewhere, sometime, Mayweather has gone over the edge.
Now he is just the rebel without a clue.
Now he is just boxing’s biggest boor.
That rhymes with something but I won’t say it.
