Please explain this to me!
I wrote a very short piece yesterday saying the fight was back on for September 19th and I received a ton of negative comments about the fight. As an ignorant American gringo, not even as handsome as “White Gorilla” Mike Marley, tell me why?.
These are the two best fighters I can think of that Manny Pacquiao could fight.
Marquez gave Pacquiao all he could handle in two 12 round fights. As Roy Jones would sing, “You all must have forgot.”
Mayweather, Jr. was the pound for pound king before retiring 16 months ago. Only then did Pacquiao grab the number one position.
Granted, Mayweather, Jr. is an acquired taste. The only fighter of recent history I could compare him to is retired Hall of Famer Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker.
Floyd’s not the boxer that southpaw Whitaker was. But he’s still effective. In fact, it was probably the in -ring antics and overall style of Whitaker that cost him his fight with an in his prime Oscar De La Hoya. Sweet Pea won that fight! Mayweather has so far avoided the problems Whitaker faced.
Pacquiao has almost caught up to De La Hoya in appeal from fans, judges and referee’s that he would win any close decisions. Not that Pacquiao doesn’t win on his own merits. Not to mention Mayweather doesn’t sell tickets.
Pacquiao will face a virtually shot Miguel Cotto November 14th. Cotto’s last two fights took it all out of him. The knockout to Margarito, in which he was winning the fight although seriously fading, and the recent Joshua Clottey bloodbath are what I speak of as evidence.
Cotto may become, after what Pacquiao does to him, or he may already be as bad off as the Meldrick Taylor that could barely get up the ring steps for the rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez.
I don’t believe the public sees what I see in Cotto. He was a great fighter. But not any more.
