Golden idea: Let’s just scrap Marquez-Mayweather

Maybe the best thing to do now is to call the whole thing off.

I?m talking about this ill-conceived, synthetic bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr., he of the tendaroni ribs, and Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez.

We?re coming up on July 1 and the rescheduled date of Sept. 19 is looking shakier than the automobile makers in Detroit.

Tea leaf readers note that Golden Boy, which dispenses information as readily as the KGB did in the old USSR, has already spoken of pushing the so called ?Who Is Number One? fight back until October or even November.

In this fuzzy case, maybe it?s not the Goldens stonewalling because I?m sure they don?t enjoy each passing day with no word from the Mayweather camp as to when L?il Floyd can be ready for his L?il Fight against the L?il Mexicano.

So the best move now is to reduce the continuing damage to both the Marquez and Mayweather positions as to a Manny Pacquiao fight in 2010.

Toss the contracts for their fight and let them both zero in on the Pinoy Idol.

Floyd-Manny can be Pacman?s big first fight of next year. It certainly should be more lucrative than a third match with Juan Ma.

Marquez can find another Juan Diaz to have target practice with to stay sharp and then he can be in the on deck circle as the Floyd-Manny winner?s fall opponent.

I don’t envision Pacquiao leaving the big stage without completing the trilogy with Juan Ma, I really don’t. Win or lose against Mayweather, it’s a halfway sold out of the starting gate fight for JMM and MP.

I know, I know, stop making so much sense, Marley.

Meanwhile, you may have missed it but the real loose cannon for the Goldens is their unhappy camper Sugar Shane Mosley.

He?s proclaiming that Pacman would pull in $20 million to fight him as he is a massively popular figure worldwide. I hate to break this to you, Sugar, but PBF has already trashed you on that issue.

Maywetaher told BoxingScene that Mosley is not capable of selling tickets in any venue outside of California.

?No disrespect to him, Mosley can only sell tickets in California. I’m not saying that he’s not a good fighter, but when you talk about pay-per-view numbers and selling tickets – Shane Mosley is a good fighter but Floyd Mayweather can go anywhere and sell it out,? Mayweather said.

?I’ve dominated and been in this sport since the 90s. You forgot, just a little while ago you had to rebuild Shane Mosley. Against Mayorga, I thought if Mayorga would have won the last round it would have been a draw. And Margarito was a guy who had one tremendous win and this is what he got to doing – he began reading his articles, got a couple of dollars and his head got big. Everybody said Margarito was the guy to fight [for Mosley] but they forget that he lost to Paul Williams,? Mayweather said.

Delusional anxiety seems to be running rampant through boxing the way swine flu hammered Mexico City.

Mayweather can go anywhere and sell it out?

Is that why there were either 2,300 or 3000 tickets sold for the July 18 date against Juan Ma in Vegas, Floyd?

That?s what I would call a L?il Box Office Problem, wouldn?t you?

Let?s scrap Marquez-Mayweather and move on.

It?s best for Floyd, for Juan and for Manny really.

And it?s best for the fans.

The only reason I see it happening, though, is this.

It?s what is best for the Golden Boys also.
