Mayol should have won: Salud

CEBUANO Promoter Wakkee Salud said Rodel Mayol should have against Ivan Calderon last Sunday at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

Salud, who handles Mayol along with his friend and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, believes that Mayol should have been given the technical knockout win because he claims that what worsened the gash on the 34-year-old Calderon?s forehead in the sixth round was a punch, not a head butt.

?The way I see it Mayol should have been awarded with the win. The fight was stopped but it wasn?t a head butt but a legitimate punch,? said Salud.

?They shouldn?t have gone to the scorecards,? he added.

The undefeated Calderon kept his crown after the judges scored the bout a technical draw. The fight was stopped in the sixth round by the order of the ring physician because Calderon?s cut in the forehead, which he acquired in the third round from an accidental clash of heads, was aggravated by another head clash in the sixth.

The 27-year-old Mayol was disappointed after the fight and asked for a rematch as soon as Calderon?s wound heals.

?It depends on WBO and the promoter if they will honor Mayol with a rematch,? said Salud. ?I think Bob Arum will be working on a rematch.?

ABS-CBN news reported last night that Arum will get Mayol a rematch.

Calderon also suffered a huge cut in his head in his last fight, a rematch with former world champion Hugo Cazares last year, which sidelined him for 10 months.
