Pacquiao pandemic afflicts British boxing fans

The poor Brits are getting another Pacman beating.

The entire United Kingdom boxing community may be sick and tired of being sick and tired of hearing about Manny Pacquiao.

First, it was plucky Mancunian Ricky Hatton who got hammered by the Pinoy Idol in their May 2 two round bout.

Now it?s Super Joe Cazlaghe, the retired undefeated Welsh super middleweight hero, who will be overshadowed by Pacman at Friday night?s Boxing Writer Association of America Awards Dinner in Manhattan.

Pacquiao is the winner of the top BWAA honor, the Edward J. Neil Award as Fighter of the Year.

The Eddie Futch-John Condon Award as Trainer of the Year is also in the Team Pacquiao column as its winner is ubiquitous Coach Freddie Roach.

Calzaghe, who seems to have hung up the gloves for good after beating Bernard Hopkins and then Roy Jones in his final bouts, is getting the Al Buck Award, named after the longtime New York Post scribe. The Buck Award is for the Manager of the Year and I guess Calzaghe managed himself for the Jones bout.

Mexico at least gets to take a bow on both ends of the Harry Markson Award for Fight of the Year as little giants Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez are honored. No doubt, this blood and guts pair has earned all kinds of plaudits.

Others taking top honors at the Capitale Restaaurant are Don King flack Alan Hopper (Marvin Kohn Good Guy Award) and HBO?s ?unofficial judge? Harold Lederman (Sam Taub Broadcasting Award).

Norm Frauenheim of the Arizona Republic is duly rewarded for his excellent fight coverage with the Nat Flesicher Award.

I was up for the White Gorilla Award but somebody left it between a roller skate and one of my banana peels.

Guess I slipped up.
