In a report recently posted by boxingscene.com, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaeffer responded to reports about poor ticket sales for the recently postponed Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez bout originally scheduled for July 18. Schaefer said,
“I have the reports right in front of me, and there have been $5.5 million in sales already,” Schaefer said. “That’s ahead of the pace that Pacquiao and (Ricky) Hatton did at the same time frame. So all that talk (that) the fight isn’t selling is a lot of bull. It’s all the Floyd haters making stuff up.”
Ironically though, it’s Golden Boy fighter and business partner Shane Mosley himself who said something about the poor sales of the “Number One vs. Numero Uno” event. Mosley as reported by DogHouseBoxing.com told sports talk show ?Morency? hosted by Gabriel Morency on Hardcore Sports Radio (Sirius 98) and The Score Television Network that the Marquez/Mayweather fight is being delayed because people don?t want to pay to see Mayweather. Mosley also said that Vegas is trying to lure Mexican fans into paying to see the fight by scheduling it on Mexican Independence Day. Interestingly enough, the statement Mosley made coincides with rumors that were swirling about the Mayweather-Marquez fight a few weeks before the announced injury.
This begs the question then whether everything is well within the Golden Boy camp. Is Mosley frustrated for not being able to land a mega-fight with Pacquiao? Was Schaefer calling Mosley a “Floyd hater” for saying people do not want to see Mayweather? Or is Mosley simply unaware of the business dealings within the company he is an associate with? Either way, we need answers.
As of press time, I still haven’t received a call back from the Mosley camp. I will try to get to the bottom of this one way or another. Hopefully Mosley’s people would call me back.
