CEBU City could host an exciting double world championship extravaganza this year.
Fightnews.com reported that Top Rank Promotions? Bob Arum is now working on a double world title card in Cebu City this September.
The card is expected to feature Brian Viloria?s defense of his International Boxing Federation light flyweight title and the rematch between Mandaue City?s Rodel Mayol and World Boxing Organization light flyweight king Ivan Calderon.
“Matod Pa Sa Lola ni Noy Kulas.” Join the story-writing contest on Cebuano folklore and win prizes.
Cebuano promoter Rex ?Wakee? Salud, who handles Mayol along with his friend and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, is ecstatic about the proposed bout and believes it is right to give the 27-year-old Mayol an immediate rematch because the fight ended controversially.
No hometown decision
?Mayol should be given a rematch because he deserved to win that fight,? Salud told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday in an interview.
Mayol?s fight with Calderon in New York last Sunday ended in a draw and Calderon got to keep his belt.
?There?s a possibility that this will happen because I have heard that Viloria wants to fight here. It could become a double world championship bout,? said Salud.
Salud assured that if the fight will take place in Cebu City, there won?t be any hometown decisions in favor of Mayol.
?They can?t say that there would be a hometown decision because there won?t be any Filipino judges and the WBO will be the one to pick the judges,? he said.
This would be the first time that Cebu City will be having a double world championship fight and Salud believes that could increase the quality of boxing in Cebu City.
?Bringing a double world championship here would have a huge effect on boxing in Cebu,? said Salud.
Last April, Manila had a double world championship event also promoted by Top Rank.
It featured the bouts of IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire and Viloria.
