GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Manny Pacquiao, by technically knocking out Marco Antonio Barrera, the Mexican featherweight king who vowed to teach him a boxing lesson, should be honored. No question about that. The pride of the Philippines raised to a great height the Filipino pride.
But in honoring him — accolade from the President and sports leaders, a congressional medal of honor from House Speaker Jose de Venecia, a testimonial parade in Manila, and most probably the Athlete of the Year Award — the government and sports leaders are confessing why Filipino athletes no longer dominate like their predecessors used to do 40 years ago.
