CEBUANO Z Gorres could get his biggest break and may join Manny Pacquiao in Bob Arum?s Top Rank Promotions.
ALA Promotions received an e-mail yesterday from Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler saying they are interested in signing Gorres.
?We?re not saying that it?s already a done deal but Top Rank has shown so much interest. We?re still in the process of negotiation,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Aldeguer said Top Rank has long been eyeing to get Gorres but the 27-year-old Mandaue City fighter was still tied up with Arum?s rival promotional outfit, Golden Boy Promotions.
However, Oscar dela Hoya?s outfit didn?t renew Gorres? contract that expired in 2007.
?They were always interested in Z Gorres because he gave their guy (Fernando Montiel) a tough fight,? said Aldguer.
Gorres fought Montiel, who was the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight titleholder at that time, in 2007 in Cebu City. He lost via a controversial split decision.
Gorres also fought world champion Vic Darchinyan and earned a controversial draw in 2008.
?We?re very interested in Top Rank?s offer. We are honored that other big promotional companies are interested in signing another ALA boy,? said Aldeguer.
If Gorres signs with Top Rank, Aldeguer is optimistic that he will be given a chance for bigger fights in the US.
?We are targeting him to campaign in the US. He is ready, he has fought some of the best and he is already up there (in the world rankings),? he said.
Gorres is ranked No.3 in the WBO and No.10 in the International Boxing Federation as a bantamweight, while he is No.13 in the World Boxing Council and No.11 in World Boxing Association as a super flyweight.
He is also ranked No. 4, as a flyweight by Ring Magazine?which is considered the Bible of boxing.
