MANILA, Philippines ? Two senators suspect that politics was behind the appointment of world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao at the Department of Justice as special assistant on intelligence matters.
?Kalokohan yan [That?s a joke]. Hindi tama na gawin siyang espiya. Hindi tugma sa kanyang image,? Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said on Tuesday.
?Nagpapa-papel lang siguro si Gonzalez kaya ini-offer niya yung position kay Pacquiao [Maybe Gonzalez is just trying to butter up Pacquiao] ,? Pimentel said, referring to Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez.
Pimentel believes that Pacquiao would be more effective in his other post as ambassador of peace and understanding.
Senator Manuel Roxas also believed that Pacquiao was given the posts by those people who wanted to get his support this coming election.
?You now, this is now the season for politics so all politicians or those who want to run are looking for ways to be close to Manny,? said Roxas in Filipino.
?Manny Pacquiao should be careful because his name is clean and untainted and if he would allow himself to be used, he would definitely be linked to the corruption of those who would be using him,? he said.
While he believes that Pacquiao can contribute more to the government especially in its efforts to forge peace with the rebels, Roxas said the people have yet to see how he could be of use at the justice department.
But Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile was more optimistic on what Pacquiao could contribute to the department.
?Maybe [he has a talent] for it in addition to being a boxer. I will presume that he has a talent for it,? Enrile said in a separate interview.
