ABAP reaches out, listens to boxers

MANILA, Philippines – The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines conducted over the weekend one of its regular consultations with members of the national training pool as well as their coaches to determine essential needs that will lead to a more systematic and efficient approach in preparing for major international tournaments.

Executive director Ed Picson visited ABAP?s training camp in Baguio and discussed details on how the national boxers will stay focused on their training.

?Since vital tournaments are fast approaching, we want to know every concern of the boxers and their coaches like equipment as well as the training conditions here in Baguio,? Picson said.

Picson also relayed the plans of ABAP, specifically on the ranking of team members and tournaments they will participate in.

The boxing official also emphasized ABAP?s readiness to support those who wish to pursue their education while training ? which the ABAP leadership has encouraged.

?I told them that to just inform us if they want to go to school and eventually earn a degree,? said Picson, who was impressed with the enthusiasm and optimism showed by members of the national team.

ABAP is busy preparing for upcoming events in its grassroots program aimed at discovering potential international campaigners.

The Visayas leg of ABAP?s Area tournaments will be held March 22-27 under the joint hosting of Ormoc City and the adjacent town of Kananga, both in the province of Leyte.

Picson also said brothers Mayor Eric Codilla of Ormoc and Mayor Elmer Codilla of Kananga welcomed the opportunity to help in the development of amateur boxing in the country.

After the Visayas leg, Luzon follows on April 14-18, Mindanao on May 10-15, and Southern Tagalog on June 5-10.
