DONNIE ?Ahas? Nietes proved that he is one of the best mini-flyweights out there. Now he wants the best fights among the elite fighters in the lower weight divisions.
After successfully defending his World Boxing Organization mini-flyweight crown last Sunday in hostile territory against Mexican challenger Erik Ramirez, Nietes wants the best names out there.
However, he must first go through the Mexican who owns half of his title, interim WBO mini-flyweight champion Manuel Vargas.
?We are open for unification but there is still Vargas. We want Donnie to be the sole champion, this is our concern right now,? said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer in a press conference last Wednesday at the Sugbahan Restaurant.
Vargas owns part of the title after dethroning Daniel Reyes via a 4th round knockout last Dec. 6 in Mexico.
Interim
The WBO gave an interim title match to Reyes, who at that time was the No.1 contender, after Nietes failed to defend his title because of a series of problems with the promotions that resulted to a long lay-off for the ALA warrior.
ALA Promotions will be starting the negotiations for Nietes? title fight with Vargas within the week and they wish the fight to be in Cebu City.
?If the fight pushes through, then we want the fight to be held here but it depends on the purse. Our priority is to bring it here,? said Aldeguer, who was very proud of his wards recent accomplishment.
Next fight
After his upcoming clash with Vargas, Nietes desires to battle with International Boxing Federation light flyweight titleholder Ulises Solis.
?I would like to fight Solis because he is a well-known Mexican fighter so that I will be noticed more,? said Nietes, who won his second title defense in the hilltop stadium of the Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Mexico.
He believes that he has the skills to match those of the Mexican champion, who has conquered a handful of skilled Filipinos, the likes of Rodel Mayol, Glenn Donaire and Bert Batawang.
?At 108? No problem. He?s not that big,? said the 26-year-old Nietes, who is willing to move up a division higher to fight Solis.
