Less than a week before the much-anticipated boxing extravaganza ?Judgment Day at The Waterfront,? and Z ?The Dream? Gorres assured that the Cebuano fight fans will be treated to an exhilarating boxing match.
Gorres, who will be debuting in the bantamweight category, promised a new and improved boxer will be in the ring against former world champion Roberto Carlos Leyva, on March 14 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.
?I?m very much ready for the fight,? said Gorres in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday. ?Expect a good show. I guarantee a better performance.?
Relaxed
ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer has overseen Gorres? training in the past few months and he believes that his ward is much more relaxed in the new weight division .
?I?m excited to see what he has at 118. He is very comfortable. We had a few adjustments in his training,? said Aldeguer. ?He feels very good right now. He didn?t have to drain himself in losing weight.?
Aldeguer said they have changed a few routines in Gorres? training and has focused on improving his conditioning.
Future
If the 26-year-old ALA star is successful in his clash with Leyva, ALA Promotions will be grooming him for a rematch with Fernando Montiel or against a named opponent in the US.
?We would want that. That is also what Z wants,? said Aldeguer, on the idea of a rematch with the Mexican world champion. ?We also want Z to fight in the States with big named opponents.?
ALA Promotions is also looking at pitting Gorres against Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista?s tormentor Heri-berto Ruiz.
Acid test
Meanwhile, Milan ?Milenyo? Melindo, who will co-headline the promotion with Gorres, will be facing former world champion Muhammad Rachman, who will be his acid test if he is destined for greatness.
Aldeguer said he arranged for Melindo to face the veteran Rachman to determine if he really has the potential to become a world champion.
?March 14 will be a defining moment for Milan. It will answer the question if he really is up there,? said Aldeguer. ?A lot of people were asking me why we had Milan fight Rachman. That is what he needs so that we?ll know what he?s made of.?
