AFTER Michael ?The Great? Katsidis? venture in Cebu City, it will be former Mexican world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon?s turn to fight here as he is scheduled to clash with Filipino hard-hitter Michael Farenas in a non-title bout on April 18.
SGG Promotions big boss Sammy Gello-ani received the go signal from De Leon?s handlers, the Golden Boy Promotions, to bring the Mexican knockout artist to fight in the Philippines.
He is planning on fixing him up with Gerry Pe?alosa?s ward Farenas at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.
Although the details of the boxing promotion regarding the financial aspect will still be finalized this week, Gello-ani promised the Cebu fight fans a great battle between the two hard punchers.
?This will be a good international fight for the fans because Farenas is a brave fighter and de Leon is a world class boxer,? said Gello-ani in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
The famed Cebuano-based promoter believes that both pugilists will have their own advantages in this fight.
?Farenas will have an advantage because he is a natural featherweight and is a legitimate fighter in that weight division, while De Leon is moving up a division higher,? said Gello-ani.
?Moving up in weight may be effective for De Leon because he has a big body structure,? he added.
Both fighters will be fighting in the 125 pounds weight.
The 28-year-old De Leon won his last fight against Argentinian Damian David Marchiano via a fourth-round knockout last November, after losing his World Boxing Organization super bantamweight title to undefeated Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez by a devastating first-round knockout last June.
Lopez is well-known to the Filipino fans for being the slayer of Filipino boxing idol?s WBO bantamweight king Pe?alosa and Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista.
Also slated to fight in this planned fight card are Anthony Marcial, Ciso Morales and Marvin Sonsona who will all be pitted against foreign foes.
