BOXERS took center stage in the Sportswriters Association of Cebu-SMC 27th Sports Awards Wednesday night at the Casino Espa?ol.
Reigning world champions Gerry Pe?alosa and Donnie Nietes were named co-Athletes of the Year for the second straight edition, while boxing star Manny Pacquiao was mobbed by the awardees when he got to the venue.
Pe?alosa, who will be facing German Meraz this Saturday, received his award from Pacquiao, while ALA Promotions? Michael Aldeguer got the award in behalf of Nietes.
Nietes is currently in the US preparing for his March 1 (RP time) title fight in Mexico.
Pacquiao, who also received an honorary doctorate from Southwestern University that afternoon, was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The affair?s guest of honor, Bacolod Rep. and Philippine Olympic Committee Chairman Monico Puentevella, also amused the audience with tales of Pacquiao?s exploits.
Puentevella, who was in the Beijing Olympics, revealed that prior to the opening ceremonies, where Pacquiao carried the country?s flag, NBA stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James asked to have their photo taken with Pacquiao.
?Even NBA stars want to have a photo op with Pacquiao,? said Puentevella.
Celtics
After Pacquiao had his picture taken with the Cleveland and LA Lakers stars, he nonchalantly told Puentevella, ?Balik na ta sa linya, Boston Celtics fan man gyapun ko.?
Also prior to his fight with Oscar dela Hoya, Puentevella said he was amazed by Pacquiao?s confidence.
?He came to us and asked why we were all nervous, and added that he was going to win,? Puentevella said.
Puentevella admitted that prior to the fight, he told Pacquiao, ?Manny you?re my friend, I believe in you, but if ever Oscar knocks you down, don?t get up.?
Manny merely replied, ?I?m going to win.? (ML)
