It’s not good practice for a world boxing governing body to leave a title vacant. A vacant title means no sanctioning fees are being generated from that particular belt.
The WBO will fill the vacancy for its lightweight title, which went blank when Nate Campbell failed to make weight Friday in Florida, by recognizing the winner of the Feb. 28 Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz fight in Houston.
Now the Diaz and Marquez camps have to fork over WBA sanctioning fees. They were competing for The Ring magazine title which carries no sanctioning fees and is owned by promoter Golden Boy.
Is this a new trend by the Goldens, seeking out Alphabet Group belts, or did they just want to add a little glitter to the telecast?
The WBO is not concerned with that. They are concerned with generating sanctioning fees because they are to the organizations what fresh blood was to Dracula.
