Pacman in ABAP national tourney

The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) has invited Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as one of its guests of honor for the Grand National Amateur Boxing Championship (NABC) set Jan. 17 to 24 in Bacolod City.

Incoming ABAP secretary-general and treasurer Patrick Gregorio yesterday said Pacquiao, who is expected to join the opening rites on Jan. 18, will inspire young and aspiring Filipino boxers to work hard in their craft and hopefully be part of the national team in the future.

Gregorio also believed that Pacquiao?s presence will encourage more athletes to join the tournament.

“This year?s NABC, hosted by Philippine Olympic Committee chairman and Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, promises to be more colorful and exciting,” Gregorio said.

Aside from the tournament, ABAP will also hold a boxing conference to be attended by stakeholders and launch the amateur boxing inter-region tournament.

“The Philippine boxing program for 2009 is expected to break new grounds under the chairmanship of Manny V. Pangilinan and the new leadership of ABAP president Ricky Vargas and vice president Manny Lopez,” Gregorio said.

Vargas will officially take over the presidential post on Thursday, replacing incumbent chief Lopez.
