I don?t know why they portray Hollywood as a town without pity. Beneath all the tinsel, all the plastic and all the other superficiality, there are human beings whose hearts drip with empathy for the less fortunate.
One such person is Manny Pacquiao Coach Freddie Roach. Now the Improper Bostonian has revealed that, as the holidays approach, he can?t but help think of a poor lad named Oscar De La Hoya.
Roach feels he became the personal pi?ata for Oscar and his adoring fans after the decision loss in what Bob Arum aptly called the ?Businessmen?s Special? between Oscar and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Roach said he had a great fight plan, that he sketched out the X?s and O?s necessary for ODLH to beat the unbeaten Prertty Boy, but that there was pilot error along about the sixth round.
Obviously, the reference was to the pumping left jab which Oscar abandoned.
?We had a plan for six rounds,? Roach said. ?Then he stopped doing it. Is that my fault?
?I don?t think so but I sure took the heat for it,? Roach said.
Then Roach unloaded his latest high velocity blast on Pacman?s Dec. 6 opponent.
?In a way, I feel sorry for Oscar?for the way he treated me and the other trainers he has had, the other trainers who have worked for him?
?Oscar never loses a fight,? Roach said. ?It?s always the trainer who loses it. There?s a message in there somewhere and it?s not good.?
The Roach shotgun keeps pumping live ammo.
I?m sure there will be the usual Casper Milquetoast response from the Oscar camp.
Roach? Oh, yeah, you mean the disgruntled ex-employee of Oscar? What do you expect?
That will be, more or less, the tepid answer from Big Bear.
Oscar and his minions need to wake up and smell the coffee because I think Coach is just getting warmed up.
Any day now, or certainly in Vegas during fight week, Roach will stop gilding the lily.
