This coming December there is a little fight set to happen in Las Vegas. Two of the most popular fighters in the world, Manny Pacquiao, 47-3-2, 35 KO’s, will be taking on Oscar De La Hoya, 39-5, 30 KO’s.
De La Hoya has long been the biggest draw in the sport and has been a part of record breaking pay per views. But joining him will be another big star and a man gaining fans every fight, Manny Pacquiao.
I can remember when I first saw Manny Pacquiao in a live fight. It was his fight against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba on HBO. I remember watching it thinking: wow! This guy is just a buzzsaw! I clearly remember calling my brother and asking him if he was watching the fight and had just seen what I did.
From that point on, I was following his career and seen him raise his game and make it to the top of the Pound for Pound list. I have seen him move up in weight from 122 pounds all the way up to 135 pounds winning titles along the way.
I have seen him tear through Mexican after Mexican fighter and then earned himself a nickname of ?The Mexicutioner.? The funny thing is that along the way he actually earned not only the respect of Mexicans but also has won a great many fans along the way.
For the Pacquiao – Barrera 2 fight, I was at a house with nothing but Mexicans watching the fight and to my surprise most of them were cheering for the ?Pacman.?
It was only a few years before that after Pacquiao had already beat Barrera the first time and had taken on Erik Morales that any and all Mexican boxing fans I knew basically hated him for beating the best Mexico had to offer.
